The Ordo Dracul: Often referred to as the Dragons, or simply as the Ordo, the Ordo Dracul are the soul-children of Vlad the Impaler himself – the original Dragon, Count Dracula.
“There are cheat codes to this game Vampire, and the Ordo have them all.” – B. Simon Smith. It’s true; the Ordo are the covenant of cheese. Dracula, as the Rites of the Dragon attest, was obsessed with breaking the “curse” of vampirism. The Dragons, accordingly, are scientists and philosophers, doing strange and hair-raising research into what we are and what makes us act the way we do – and trying to get around it. Why do Kindred frenzy, why do they lose themselves to the Beast? The Dragons have a way to avoid that. Why are we unable to stay awake during the day? The Dragons can do it. Many lose sight of the ultimate goal of “curing” or “transcending” vampirism, and simply seek knowledge for the sake of knowledge – I know a trio of Dragons who once spent an entire evening trying to “educate” the beast. One of the three was forced into frenzy and then restrained, while the other two tried to teach it rudiments of communication. By the end of the night, they realized they had simply created a new potential Masquerade breach for themselves, as they had succeeded in teaching the frenzied Beast to ask for blood – but the experiment was a success, and they had learned something, and that was all that mattered. A Dragon’s haven is always interesting to walk into; you never know what you might find. Try not to touch anything. It might bite.
Most Dragons are Sworn to one order or another: the Sworn of the Axe, for instance, are the physical defense for the covenant; the Sworn of the Mysteries head up the research side of things, while the Sworn of the Dying Light handle the politics, dealing with the rest of the Kindred world while their compatriots do the fun stuff without them. Those who are Unsworn are looked upon with a mixture of condesencion and mistrust until they get off the damn fence and pick a faction. Standing within the covenant is entirely dependent on how many Coils of the Dragon you learn (“Coils” meaning the ways this covenant has found to defeat the negative aspects of vampirism, allowing the vampire to reach his full potential.) For all the Invictus’ claims, this is the true meritocracy, where the only coin is scholarship and research – those who study and learn are afforded respect.
The Dragons’ natural allies are everybody; you never know who might teach you something useful. Their natural enemies – well, they have none. Who wouldn’t like a quiet, unobtrusive Dragon?
